Define the procedure: Carotid endarterectomy and explain how it is different from an anastomosis?
In the blood vessel that is the common carotid artery and the are of it dividing into the internal and external carotid artery building up atherosclerosis in it forming a plaque. This induce many risk like stroke etc so it can lead to impairment. To avoid this the stenosis caused by plaque has to be removed . So this procedure that is carotid endarterectomy is used to remove the plaque from the blood vessel. As the growth of plaques include the endothelial layer it has to remove the inner endothelial layer also so named endarterectomy.
It is different from anastomosis as in this procedure the plaque is removed by endarterectomy and in anastomosis the stenosed vessel is removed completely and anastomosed. This will take more recovery time than carotid endarterectomy
