What is the threshold of hearing?

a. The smallest amount of sound that a person can detect

b. The sound that a person detects in a certain percentage (often 50%) of identical presentations

c. The smallest amount of sound a person can detect in two consecutive presentations

d. None of the above

Answer #1

The organ of hearing is ear. The inner ear contains cochlea that helps covert the sound wave to electrical impulse and is travelled to auditory cortex by auditory nerve for processing.
Ear can perceive sound with a certain level of frequency.
The level of sound above which it can be heard is known as the auditory threshold or threshold of hearing. A person cannot detect sound below this threshold. Normally, the auditory threshold is 0.0DB.
So the threshold of hearing is the smallest amount of sound that a person can detect.
Answer : a. The smallest amount of sound that a person can detect

Dolphins emit sound bursts that range in frequency from 1 Hz to 120 kHz. Say that a dolphin is using a sound burst consisting of these frequencies as a form of sonar (like the bat example). Let the burst last for a time interval of 10 ms, after which it listens for 100 ms. Say that the logarithmic intensity (loudness) of the dolphin’s sound is 50 dB as measured at 1 m away. Dolphins can hear sounds that are 2...

15.49 - 30 seconds of exposure to 115 dB sound can damage your hearing, but a much quieter 94 dB may begin to cause damage after 1 hour of continuous exposure. You are going to an outdoor concert, and you'll be standing near a speaker that emits 47 W of acoustic power as a spherical wave. What minimum distance should you be from the speaker to keep the sound intensity level below 94 dB? Express your answer to two significant...

Loss of hearing can be a significant problem for older adults. Although hearing aids can correct the physical problem, people who have lived a hearing impairment often develop poor communication strategies and social skills. To address this problem, a home education program has been developed to help people who are receiving hearing aids for the first time. The program emphasizes communication skills. To evaluate the program, overall life satisfaction was measured before treatment, again at the end of the training...

If sound wave C has 100,000 times the intensity of sound wave D, then C has a sound level of how many decibels greater than D? A: 50 dB B: 10000 dB C: 40dB D: 10 dB E: 100dB At a very low frequency(such as 50 Hz), the human ear has more sensitivity to sound level compared to a medium frequency(such as 2000 Hz). You can sometimes hear a low-frequency “moaning” noise when strong winds blow through power lines strung between two poles. The wind is exciting a particular standing wave mode on the wire between its fixed ends at the poles; in this example, the wire is observed to have the shape shown in the diagram below at a particular instant in time. (a) If, for this mode (or harmonic), the frequency you hear is 20 Hz (near the lower threshold of human...

1. Consider a speaker at some fixed position, emitting sound uniformly in all directions. You are standing at some distance d from this speaker, holding a sound-intensity measuring device. You then walk 25.0 m in a straight line towards the speaker. At this point you observe that the intensity of the sound has doubled (from the previous location). Determine the distance d. There are no echoes or reflections or interference. 2. You are standing equidistant from four identical jet engines...
