Human Physiology

Explain what happens during lymphocyte maturation to ensure B and T lymphocytes do not attack healthy body cells. Include the site of maturation for B cells and for T cells.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

During Lymphocyte maturation Negative Clonal selection is the process to ensure B and T Lymphocyte do not attack healthy body cells. During negative clonal selection the lymphocytes which  able to bind with self antigens are destroyed.

E.g. During T cell maturation - negative selection eliminates T cells that reacts tok strongly with Self MHC or self MHC peptide.

Sites of maturation -

T - cells mature in Thymus gland.

B cell maturation starts in Bone marrow and it completes its maturation in spleen.
