Dermatome is an epidermal region of skin that is supplied by a single spinal nerve. The dermatome provides sensory input to one pair of spinal or cranial nerve. Each spinal nerve innervates different area of the skin.
Thus, by testing the skin sensitivity in different dermatomes, spinal nerves damaged in those regions can be determined.
The first seven pairs of spinal nerves are cervical nerves (C1 to C7), which are seven pairs in number, these nerves emerging above the vertebra. The C1 spinal nerve does not have a corresponding dermatome, and it is the only nerve without a corresponding dermatome.
