Compare and contrast the sympathetic nervous system and the parasympathetic nervous system in terms of origin of pre-ganglionic fibers, relative length of pre and post ganglionic fibers, and location of ganglia. (Answer must be in paragraph formate)

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The preganglionic fibres of sympathetic system originates from thoracic and lumbar segments of spinal cord whereas parasympathetic fibres originates from brainstem and sacral segments of spinal cord. The ganglion in parasympathetic system is close to the effector organ which means that preganglionic fibres are long and postganglionic fibres are short, in contrast to this ganglion of sympathetic system is close to CNS, having short preganglionic fibres and long postganglionic fibres.

Compare and contrast the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system. Include information about pre- and post-ganglionic neurons, the neurotransmitters involved, and the typical response at each of the following effectors: adrenal medulla, arterioles, sweat glands, and the heart. Clearly indicate if sympathetic neurons, parasympathetic neurons, or both innervate each of these effectors.

Which of the following is a difference between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems? - Norepinephrine is released exclusively from post ganglionic fibers in the sympathetic system. - The adrenal gland enhances responses from the parasympathetic system. - The sympathetic system nerves exit the spinal cord in the cervical region of the vertebral column. - Postganglionic fibers are longer in the parasympathetic system. - All of these are differences in the autonomic nervous system.
