What is myelin and how is an action potential different in a nerve without myelin. Can you provide more details as possible
Myelin surrounds the neurons and helps in faster conduction of impulses. They are made of fat and provides insulation to the axons it surrounds. In central nervous system myelin is produced by oligodendrocytes which is a type of glial cell. But in peripheral nervous system it is produced by Schwann cells. The impulses jump from one nodes of Ranvier to other and hence helps in the faster conduction of electrical impulses. But a neuron which is lacking myelin will have slower conduction of impulse. The impulse travel in continuous wave rather than jumping like in myelinated neurons.
