Jason is a nine-year-old child who developed chronic renal failure after suffering from a streptococcal infection (strep throat). Jason's renal function has declined steadily over the last three years, and he is currently receiving hemodialysis three times a week. A search is on for a suitable kidney donor. Jason is 4 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 55 pounds. He fol- lows a fluid-, sodium-, potassium-, and phosphorus-restricted diet, His typical energy intake is about 1000 kcalories per day.

My question is:

Discuss some diet strategies you can suggest to Jason and his parents to help him comply with his diet. Consider the impact of renal disease on Jason, his family, and his interactions with friends.

Answer #1

Here, it is said that Jason is on Hemodialysis. Hemodialysis is one that has more diet restrictions as compared to that of peritoneal dialysis. Following are the diet restriction points to be noted

  • Canned, processed food as they have more sodium content
  • Banana, apricot, orange, and grapes are to be avoided as they are a high source of potassium
  • Fluid content intake should be reduced as much as possible
  • Dairy products and meat are to be avoided as they have more phosphorus content.
  • Fish, egg, legumes, barley, etc that are rich in protein shall be consumed
  • Diet rich in vitamins such as thiamine and C, minerals such as zinc and selenium is the ones that must be well administered.
  • Energy calorie per day should rise to 1970 kcal/day
