What do you think is the significance of the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone system? What do you think could happen if that system was not in place or was malfunctioning?

Answer #1

This system is also known as RAAS and is very much helpful in maintaining blood volume which in turn helps in maintaining blood pressure. These three acts in a series one after the other when body senses a decrease in blood pressure and immediately efforts to maintain homeostasis is established by the activation of this system which starts with the secretion of renin and ends with the release of aldosterone leading to an increase in BP. If this system was absent then issues such as sodium loss, potassium retention, decreased fluid retention and ultimately the lowering of blood pressure which is life threatening can happen. Malfunctioning is associated with conditions such as hypertension, CVD and CKD.

I do not understand why the Renin-Angiotensin System is a target area (drug therapy) for high blood presssure patients if the system is only supposed to be be primarly active when someone is experiencing hypotension. This is confusing. Can someone explain why renin would still be high in patients with high blood pressure?
