1) Describe the general pathway by which a protein is produced and is secreted from the cell.
2) How does the Golgi sort proteins?
Proteins are produced by stringing amino acids together in the order specified by messenger RNA strands that were transcribed from DNA in the cell nucleus. The process of synthesizing a protein is called translation. It occurs on ribosomes in the cytoplasm of a cell.
The secretory pathway involves to the endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus and the vesicles that travel in between them as well as the cell membrane and lysosomes. It’s named ‘secretory’ for being the pathway by which the cell secretes proteins into the extracellular environment. Various lysosomal enzymes are also involved in the process.
General pathway of secretion is as follows:-
Rough endoplasmic reticulum(RER) → Golgi transport vesicles → Golgi cisternae → secretory or transport vesicles → cell surface (exocytosis)
