Draw and describe the events that take place in a synapse between two neurons. What neurotransmitter is used? How does this differ from the synapse that takes place between neurons and muscle cells?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

ACETYLCHOLINE (neurotransmitter ) is used. Acetylcholine is released by motor neurons at synapses with muscle cells. Like other neurotransmitters, acetylcholine is synthesized in the cytosol of the presynaptic axon terminal and stored in synaptic vesicles

Glutamate neurotransmitters are released to a synaptic cleft between two neurons that is 140 nm wide. Within the synaptic cleft, initially there is no neurotransmitters present. After they are released from the pre-synaptic neuron, you find that the average flux of the neurotransmitters within the cleft is 2.5 x 10−4 mol/m2·s towards the post-synaptic neuron. The diffusion coefficient for Glutamate in the synaptic cleft is 8 x 10-10 m2/s. 1)Find the concentration of this neurotransmitter close to the pre-synaptic neuron...

Draw a diagram! The purpose of the diagram is to show the steps from a neuron stimulating a skeletal muscle cell to contraction of that muscle cell. Include in your diagram: •axon terminal of motor neuron •synaptic cleft •neurotransmitter •neurotransmitter binding channels on muscle cell •t-tubules •depolarization •sarcoplasmic reticulum •receptors/channels that work together to release Ca2+ •Ca2+, Where is it? Where does it go? What does it bind to? •Sarcomeres-components (actin, myosin, tropomyosin, troponin, ATP) and how it works (sliding...

Suppose that the following two events take place in the market for China’s currency, the yuan: U.S. parents are more willing than before to buy action figures and other Chinese toy exports, and China’s government tightens restrictions on the amount of U.S. dollar- denominated financial assets that Chinese residents may legally purchase. What happens to the dollar price of the yuan? Does the yuan appreciate or depreciate relative to the dollar?
