Question from the practice problems in my book that confused me:
Choose from the list the T cells that would be destroyed in the thymus?
a. A T cell that responds to antigens of viruses that have not been present in the body in years
b. A T cell that does not respond to any antigens
c. A T cell that responds only to non-self human antigens
d. A T cell that responds to antigens present on body cells
I think its just B but I'm not sure so please briefly explain and clearly state which ones are right thank you.
Correct Answer is Option D - A T CELL THAT RESPONDS TO ANTIGEN PRESENT ON BODY CELLS
Usually a Tcell is produced in the bone marrow , after that T cell is migrated into the thymus gland for maturation.
T cell in the thymus gland is known as the thymocyte.
Thymocyte tha t are active against the foreign antigens are get selected and transferred into the body for the immunity.(positive selection)
Thymocyte (T cell) that fails to recognise the bodys antigen ( self antigen) are destroyed in the thymus gland by a process called Apoptosis. This phenomenon is called Negative Selection.
