During inspiration ,

  • Diaphram - The diaphram muscle contracts downwards and flattens )
  • External intercostals muscle - contracts during inspiration.
  • scalenes - promotes forced inspiration
  • Sternocleidomastoid - promotes forced inspiration.

During expiration ,

  • Internal intercostal muscles
  • External oblique
  • Internal oblique
  • Rectus abdominis
  • Transverse abdominis

  When forceful exhalation is required, the active exhalation can be achieved by contraction of the internal intercostal muscles and abdominal wall muscles (rectus abdominis, transverse abdominis, external oblique muscle and internal oblique muscle).
