Which of the following does NOT lead to muscle fatigue?

prolonged muscle contraction
high-intensity exercise of a long duration
repetitive stimulation of a muscle
maximal tetanic tension

Homework Answers

Answer #1

CORRECT ANSWER: maximal tetanic contraction

EXPLANATION: A tetanic contraction or physiologic tetanus, is a sustained muscle contraction evoked when the motor nerve that innervates a skeletal muscle emits action potentials at a very high rate. During this type of contraction there will no accumulation of lactic acid in the muscles so there will be no fatigue. All other contraction lead to accumulation of lactic acid and cause muscle fatigue. Tetanic contraction are produced by electrical stimulation.

During high-intensity exercise, why does arterial PCO2 decrease beyond its usual set point? Group of answer choices Arterial PO2 is reduced during high intensity exercise, which stimulates chemoreceptors to increase ventilation beyond current CO2 production. During high intensity exercise, the blood becomes more alkaline, which leads to more CO2 being converted to H+ and bicarbonate. Anaerobic metabolism does not produce CO2. Acidic by-products of anaerobic metabolism decrease plasma pH, which stimulates central chemoreceptors to increase ventilation beyond current CO2 production.
