Fish use gills for gas exchange. It is a respiratory organ in fishes which helps in extraction of dissolved oxygen from water and excretes carbon dioxide. These are with numerous folds and large surface area. These folds are supported by gill protrusions called gill lamellae.

Water flows through the gills is always in the opposite direction to the blood flow. Because of this phenomenon, gills can extract oxygen in a vigorous way.

Water is fully saturated with oxygen than blood. Because of this concentration gradient, oxygen diffuses from the water into the blood. This continues until both the water and the blood reaches equal saturation of oxygen. In this way, gas exchange occurs in fish via gills.
