What is a motor unit? Where would you expect to find a larger motor unit—in your hand or in your calf muscle?

A motor unit is made up of a single nerve cell or a neuron that innervates a group of skeletal muscles. A group of motor units often work together to coordinate the contractions of a single muscle and all of the motor units within a muscle are considered to be as a motor pool.

The larger motor unit can be seen in calf muscle , a single motor unit may contain as many as 1,000 muscle fibers and where as in hand  fewer than 100 muscle fibers occupy a motor unit.
