Lasix is a brand name. The drug sold under this brand name is the furosemide. In edema we have lot of water accumulation. The furosemide acts on the the thick ascending loop of Henle. There it competes with the Cl- ion binding and disrupts the Na+/Cl- reabsorption by blocking the cotransport system. Now a less hypertonic situation is formed in intersitium comparing the lumen. Now osmotic gradient dimnishes and the water reabsorption is blocked. Thus the watering the body moves out more fast and thus we can treat edema.
