Describe how certain structures of the respiratory system can generate the resonant sounds of speech.
Ans)
The resonant sounds of speech or the speech resonance is formed due to the movement of sound made by the vocal folds by means of vocal tract which contain the pharynx, nasal cavity and oral cavity.Vocal tract will help in filtering this sound, carefully increasing the harmonics on the basis of the size and structure of vocal tract .The recognized resonance is the outcome of this filtered sound or timbre.
Velopharyngeal valve is having an important task in regulating the speech resonance; although another features of vocal tract will also make some donations in the recognized sound and these involve the size and structure of resonating chambers like the oral cavity, nasal cavity and the pharynx, then the tongue posture and lastly the extent of mouth opening.
