1. Calculate the MET cost of walking on the treadmill at 2.5mph & 6% grade.

2. Calculate the Kcal expenditure (kcal/min) for a 75kg man, performing at the MET load in the above example.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer:-

Part (1): Given, the weight of a person = 75 Kg

Speed = 2.5mph, converting it into meters per minute

2.5 x 26.8 = 67 meters per minute

Grade = 6%

First, we have to calculate gross VO2,

VO2 = 0.1 ( speed) + 1.8 ( speed) ( fractional grade) + 3.5 ml/kg/min

VO2 = 0.1 ( 67) + 1.8 (67) (6) + 3.5 = 6.7 + 723.6 + 3.5 = 733.8 ml/kg/min

Now,

METs = VO2 / 3.5 = 733.8/ 3.5 = ~209.6 METs

Part(2) :

First we have calculate net VO2,

Net VO2 = gross VO2 - 3.5 = 733.8 - 3.5 = 730.3 ml/kg/min,

Converting it into Liters/ minute = ( 730.3 x 79.5 ) / 1000 = ~ 58.06 Liters/ minute

58.06 x 5 = 290.3 kcals per minute

Thus, the Kcal expenditure = 290.3 kcals/min
