MECHANISM OF ADRENOCORTICOTROPIC HARMONE
Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is secreted by the pituitary gland and reaches the adrenal cortex by blood stream.ACTH regulates the production of steroid hormones by the pitutary gland. Two hypothalamic peptide hormones regulate this secretion; corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH) simulates ACTH secretion synergistically with vasopressin (AVP). ACTH increase the synthesis and release of all adrenal steroids, aldosterone, Cortisol and adrenal androgens ]by acting on adrenal cortex. ACTH is secreted in a pulsatile manner with diurnal variation in its secretion .ACTH production increases in stressful conditions
