does the pulmonary trunk transport oxygenated blood or deoxygenated blood? why is it an artery rather than a vein

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans: Pulmonary trunk comprises of the major blood vessel in the right ventricle. This major artery then split into two pulmonary arteries which carry deoxygenated blood or carbon rich blood to the lungs where it got oxygenated by the lungs.

Pulmonary truck is called as pulmonary artery because it carry blood away from the heart although it is deoxygenated.

As artery is defined as the vessel that carry blood away from the heart like pulmonary trunk does so it is known as pulmonary artery rather that pulmonary vein. Because veins are the blood vessels which carry blood towards the heart from other organs whether it is oxygenated or deoxygenated . The exceptions are pulmonary and umbilical veins.
