Define "total energy output". How does this differ from a person's BMR (Basal metabolism rate)?
Answer
Total energy output is the sum of energy used
in all the activites in a day that includes, physical
activity, digestion and rest.
It includes three components :
- Basal metabolic rate
- Thermic effect of food
- Physical activity
Total energy output differ from basal metabolic
rate because BMR is the amount of energy used in body
functioning only during rest.
BMR is the minimum energy required in the body to regulate
metabolic process.
The processes include :
- Nerve impulse conduction
- Heart contraction
- Reabsorption and secretion in renal tubules
- Transport of ions across cell membrane.
