Briefly describe, in your own words, how the single cell formed at fertilization differentiates
into different types of cells:

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans: The process of altering the pattern of gene expression and thus becoming a cell of a particular type is called cell differentiation. The zygote is a tot potent cell - its daughter cells can become any cell type. During embryonic development, some cells migrate. While, once an egg is fertilized by a sperm, a zygote is formed. The zygote divides into multiple cells in a process known as cleavage, triggering the beginning of embryonic differentiation. Cells in these three layers will give rise to different parts of the organism. The endoderm eventually becomes the gut.

In other words—how is it that Ca2+ serves to communicate different signals in neurons, versus muscle cells, versus egg cells, etc.?
