How can you use the Frank-Starling mechanism to explain why having bigger muscles would contribute to higher VO2 max?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Frank-Starling mechanism states that stroke volume of left ventricle will increase when left ventricular volume increases. This is due to myocyte stretch causing an increase in force of systolic contraction.

VO2 max is the maximum rate at which heart , lungs , muscles can effectively use oxygen during exercise. It is used as a way of measuring a person's aerobic capacity.

It is the muscle that uses oxygen to assist aerobic metabolism.

During exercises , bigger muscles have increased supply of blood according to Frank-Starling law and hence they have high VO2 max.

In a sentence or two each, explain how each of the structural adaptations would improve stroke volume. Hint: stroke volume is related to EDV (filling), ESV (contractility), AND Frank-Starling mechanism. Also keep in mind the concept of pre-load and after-load. Therefore, explain how the structure could affect some or all of those components.
