Simple squamous epithelium, simple cuboidal, simple columnar epithelium and psuedostratified ciliated epithelium. How are these names derived?

Answer #1

Epithelial tissues are classified majorly on the basis of the number of layers and by the shape and function of cells.

  • Squamous epithelium:
  • Cells that are wider than their height .
  • This is found as the lining of the mouth, oesophagus, the blood vessels and in the alveoli of the lungs.
  • Cuboidal epithelium:
  • Cells whose height and width are approximately the same (cube shaped).
  • Columnar epithelium:
  • Cells taller than they are wide (column-shaped).

        Pseudostratified epithelium:

Taller simple columnar epithelial cells are viewed in cross section showing several nuclei appearing at different      heights

The epithelial layer of the upper respiratory tract is mostly comprised of pseudostratified ciliated columnar cells. Whereas, in the alveoli, the tiny sacs where gas change occurs, the epithelium is comprised of single squamos cells. - Explain the functional significance of this difference in the tissues? Why don't the alveoli have the same kind of epithelium as the rest of the respiratory tract?
