The purpose of using directional terms, anatomical planes, regions and quadrants is to provide a universal “map” of the human body for the benefit of sharing results and observations between healthcare providers. By using these universal terms, doctors, nurses, PTs etc can assess the patient and communicate that information to the next provider without confusion. Everyone knows where the anterior trunk is or that a bruise is superior to the elbow. When everyone uses the same language, mistakes can be avoided. Directional terms are used in all medical examinations. Annual physicals, orthopedic exams, Physical Therapy initial examinations etc. Any time the provider is assessing, working with, treating or documenting during a visit these terms are used.
