Compare and contrast the lungs of birds and mammals. How does air flow through each? Explain the advantage of unidirectional airflow in respiratory tract of birds. Be sure to mention the role of air sacs and parabronchi.
1.The lungs of the birds do not inflate and deflated whereas the lungs of mammals inflate and deflate.Air sacs are present in birds which are absent in mammals.Unidirectional air flow is seen in birds whereas bidirectional airflow is seen in mammals.Gas exchange in birds occurs with more efficiently than the mammals.Alveoli are present in the mammals and parabronchi are present in the birds for gaseous exchange.
2.As a result of unidirectional air flow the lungs of birds are more completely ventilated than that of mammals. The flow of blood and air in birds lung is carefully arranged to maximize the gaseous exchange.
