Answer #1

The complete blood count (CBC) is a laboratory test done to evaluate the overall medical and health condition of the individual. Sometimes, it us also useful to monitor the course of treatment and progress of the disease. The CBC test provides information about the total number of red blood cells, haemoglobin count, number of leucocytes, the differential count of leucocytes and the total number of platelets.

The CBC test in an individual suffering from tuberculosis caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis is as follows,

  • Decreased red blood cell count
  • Decreased haemoglobin
  • Increased white blood cells
  • Differential count of white blood cells - increased lymphocytes and decreased monocytes
  • Erythrocyte Sedimentation rate will be increased in the acute stage of the disease
  • Platelet count may be normal
