Compare and contrast the structures and functions of the nervous and endocrine systems in the human body.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Structure

Nervous system

Endocrine system

Definition

This system is the complicated network of nerve fibres which transmits the electrical signals to and from spinal cord to brain to body parts.

This system is the collection of glands which transmits the stimuli through the hormonal response

Rate of response

Rate of response is very fast as the neurotransmitter and action potentials are quick.

Rate of response is slow as carry stimuli through the blood by hormones.

Duration of response

it is temporary and reversible

It is permanent type response

Kind of response

It is the localised type

It spread through out the body

Mode of signal transmission

Through Neurons

Through hormones via the blood.

Similarities:

Both the systems maintain the homeostasis of the body and regulated by the negative feedback mechanisms.

Which of the following statements regarding regulation of body functions and systems is false? Both the nervous system and endocrine system use chemicals to send messages. The nervous system and endocrine system cause opposite effects in the same effectors. The nervous system regulates only somatic function, while the endocrine system only affects autonomic structures. For the nervous and endocrine systems to function, the receiving cells must have the correct type of receptors.

The nervous system and endocrine system are largely responsible for maintaining homeostasis and can both be considered regulators of other systems within the body. Briefly explain the interaction of the nervous and endocrine systems with each other in general terms, then provide one specific example that demonstrates this interaction.
