Hormone X appears to regulate the blood concentration of chemical Y via a negative feedback loop. Predict what happens to the secretion of hormone X when the blood concentration of chemical Y decreases. What effect will this likely have on the blood concentration of chemical Y? Predict what happens to the secretion of hormone X when the blood concentration of chemical Y increases.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer

Hormone X regulates chemical Y concentration via a negative feedback loop.

  • When the blood concentration of chemical Y decreases, the secretion of hormone X also decreases.
    - As hormone X lowers chemical Y, a decrease in chemical Y will reduce the need for hormone X.

  • This event will maintain the normal level of chemical Y in the blood.
    - As chemical Y is decreased under influence of hormone X and later hormone X secretion is inhibited to maintain the level of chemical Y, normal range is attained.

  • When the blood concentration of chemical Y increases, the secretion of hormone X also increases.
    - As increase concentration of chemical Y is detected, a negative feedback loop triggers secretion of hormone X in order to inhibit chemical Y.
