Describe one possible effect of chronic smoking on the epithelium of the upper respiratory tract? Why do smokers develop a cough?
Smoking causes both morphological and functional alterations in Upper Respiratory tract..both oral as well as nasal inhalation causes reduction in mucocilliary transport & reduces cilliary beat as well as metaplastic alterations in respiratory mucosa with increase in number & size of goblet cells leads to increase in Upper airway secretions...chronic smoking finally leads to development of chronic RHINOSINUSITIS..
Cillia in our lungs help in keep the lungs clean...as told as above in smokers it can be partially or completely damaged..toxins starting to accumulate in lungs leads to mucus production..conuterattacks to this our body starts coughing to expel the toxins and mucus..
