A crucial role is played by Oxytocin. During labor, oxytocin plays an important role in sending the signal to the womb for the contraction of the uterine muscle. The contraction takes place when Ca2+ 's intracellular concentration increases. The contraction of the uterine muscle, in turn, stimulates the production of the prostaglandins. Which lead to more contraction

As production of oxytocin is mainly governed by a positive feedback mechanism, oxytocin is being released only when there is a trigger and its production leads to a more strong contraction from the upper uterus.

The final step of muscle contraction which is required to push the baby out is also being initiated by oxytocin. This last step of muscle contraction which is caused by the release of oxytocin is called a fetal reflex.
