Contrast the duration of the action potential and the refractory period in cardiac muscle
Ans- The cardiac action potential is the brief change in membrane potential around the cell membrane of heart cells. The action potential of cardiac muscle is longer in duration than skeletal muscle. It is around 200-250 msec. There are four phases in the action potential of cardiac muscle.
After an action potential initiates, the cardiac cell is unable to initiate another action potential for some duration of time. This period of time is referred to as refractory period and is slightly shorter than the true action potential. It's duration is around 180 msec.
