Explain how information in the nervous system is encoded.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

In the nervous system, the information is encoded in the form of electrical impulses, which is also known as an action potential. Whenever our body gets a stimulus from a source which could be light, touch, smell, sound, and taste, an action potential is generated by the sensory neurons. The action potential generated exhibits a temporal pattern, which is different for each stimulus. Therefore, in this manner, our nervous system encodes the information that it receives from the external sources.
