Which of the following will open a sodium voltage gated channel in the axon hillock?

A stimulus that reduces the number of Na+ in the intracellular fluid
A stimulus that makes the intracellular fluid more negative
Hyperpolarizing stimulus
Depolarizing stimulus

Homework Answers

Answer #1

D. Depolarizing stimulus

  • When depolarizing stimulus reach axon hillock then all the mlvoltage gated sodium channel open up. This causes influx of sodium (sodium concentration increases inside). This also makes intracellular fluid more positive.
  • Therefore a depolarizing stimulus or stimulus which makes intracellular fluid more positive or stimulus that increases the number of Na+ in intracellular fluid will open voltage gated ion channel.
  • Hyperpolarizing stimulus does opposite (makes it difficult for voltage gated ion channel to open).

5) A new drug has been discovered that completely opens the voltage-gated potassium channels. If this drug is used experimentally on an isolated axon, the membrane potential can be easily measured. Assume that this experiment provided the following results. The extracellular Na+ is 145 mM and the extracellular K+ is 4mM, the measured membrane potential in the presence of the drug is -94mV. Using this information, calculate the intracellular K+ concentration. To solve this equation, you will need to use...

2. The portion of a nerve cell that conducts signals is called an axon. Many of the electrical properties of axons are governed by ion channels, which are protein molecules that span the axon’s cell membrane. When open, each ion channel has a pore that is filled with fluid of low resistivity and connects the interior of the cell electrically to the medium outside the cell. In contrast, the lipid-rich cell membrane in which ion channels reside has very high...
