what anatomical adaption do mammals and archosaurs (eg birds and crocodilians) have in thier hearts compared to other animals that breath with lungs? how does this adaption provide an advantage for the cardiovascular system?
mammals and birds and crocodiles have a four chambered heart with single direction of flow. Thus the left and right side of the heart have no connections .This ensures that there is no mixing of oxygenated and and deoxygenated blood. This increases the PO2 of blood and ensures adequate oxygen supply to the tissue with minimum effort in oxygenation of the blood by the circulatory and the respiratory system. this is necessary to maitain the high energy demands of these animals.
