How is a person with Diabetes Mellitus condition like that of starvation? Address the role of glucagon in your answer.
Glucose is the form of carbohydrate in the blood that is metabolised to give energy. A person with diabetes mellitus is insulin-deficient. Insulin is a hormone secreted by the pancreas that converts blood glucose to glycogen and stores it. When insulin is less, glucose remains in blood itself. The body realizes that it has more energy in the form of glucose in blood ( in normal people, blood glucose is high only after a meal). The body misreads this condition as the person has just had a meal and it doesn't trigger hunger. However, as there is no food in the stomach, the secreted acid causes starvation.
