Homework Answers

Answer #1

Connective tissues consist of ground substance, fibres and cells.

Ground substance- made up of proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans.

Function- a. slows the spread of pathogens.

b. Produce the matrix of connective tissue.

Fibres- can be elastic, reticular or collagenous.

Collagenous fibres- made up of alpha polypeptide chains.

Function- binding of bones and different tissues together.

Elastic fibres- made up of elastin and microfibrils (elastic)

Function- recoiling of lungs and arteries.

97. Choose the false statement: A. The connective tissues of veins are compliant in nature due to a preponderance of collagen versus elastin fibers: this serves to minimize vascular resistance as blood nears the heart. B. The velocity of blood flow is slowest through the veins because blood pressure has dropped to very low levels by the time the blood reaches this part of the vascular system. C. The vascular components most active in vasomotor regulation of blood pressure are...

Activity 2 Handout: Case Study on Connective Tissues The Football Game Andre Billings, a 24-year-oldmale, presents in the emergency room with complaints of severe left knee pain and knee instability. The patient describes a violent “hit” during a football game that caused his left knee to buckle. The patient describes having heard a “pop” as he fell to the playing field. An initial examination of the knee reveals inflammation and a reduced range of motion. Flexion (bending) is reduced to...
