State the benefit or the concern with the "equal pressure point" occurring in smaller diameter airways.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Equal pressure point

It is the point where the pressure observed inside the airways is equal to intrapleural pressure (pressure outside).

Airways can get collapsed above equal pressure points.

When forced respiration is observed, an equal pressure tends to move towards alveoli as well as in samll airways (collapsible). There is a decrease in volume of lungs and small alveoli gets recoiled. With decrease in elastic recoil, there is a decrease in effector driving pressure and a decrease in traction of small airways is seen.
