What are the advantages and disadvantages of communication via the nervous system and communication via the endocrine system?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

1. In nervous system, communication is done by electrical signal whereas in endocrine system, communication is by chemicals called hormones. Since electrical signal travel very fast as compared to hormones, nervous system has advantage that it can transmit signals very fast. Endocrine system has disadvantage that their communication is slow as compared to nervous system.

2. The response of nervous system via generation of action potential is although very fast, but is short lived. Whereas endocrine response is of longer duration as compared to nervous system response. So endocrine has advantage in terms of duration of response.

3. Nervous system communication is limited to those parts of body which are innervated by nerves. Whereas hormones travel by blood and can reach almost every part of body. So endocrine system has wider range of communication than nervous system.
