.*) List 3 events that require the use of ATP in excitation-contraction coupling:

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Excitation-contraction coupling is the process by which electrical stimuls triggers the release of calcium from sarcoplasmic reticulum , which initiates the mechanism of muscle contraction by shortening of sarcomere.

Events that requires the use of ATP in excitation-contraction coupling includes

1 Hydrolysis of ATP by ATPase activates the myosin head so that, it can bind to actin and rotate

2.Binding of ATP to myosin causes detachment of myosin from actin after power stroke.

3. ATP powers the pumps that transport calcium ions from the cytosol back into the sarcoplasmic reticulum.

Place the following events in the correct order they occur during excitation-contraction coupling in skeletal muscle: Myosin forms a tight bond with actin and undergoes the ‘power stroke’. The troponin/tropomyosin complex shifts, exposing the myosin binding sites on the actin filament. Ca2+ binds to troponin. Ca2+ moves out of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (called a “calcium spark”).
