Based on the function, joints can be classified into three types. They are as follows:
1. Synarthroses: These are immovable joints which are common in axial skeleton. Example: Sutures of the skull
2. Amphiarthroses: These joints are slightly movable. These are also commonly found in axial skeleton. Example: Public symphisis of the pelvis
3. Diarthroses: These are freely movable joints found in appendicular skeleton. All synovial joints belong to this category. Example : Knuckle joint of the hand.
