PTH : Parathyroid hormone


Parathyroid hormone is secreted by parathyroid glands.

The effects of parathyroid hormone are :

  • Stimulates bone resorption (bone mineral breakdown).
  • Enhance calcium absorption in small intestine.
  • Enchance calcium reabsorption in renal tubules.

Collectively, PTH works in order to increase blood calcium levels.

Hence, in patients having cancer that can secrete a protein which looks and acts like PTH, there will be increased blood calcium levels.
