Homework Answers

Answer #1

Innate immunity is the source of immunity that one is born with and is relatively non- specific. The defense provided by innate immunity includes anatomic barriers, physiologic barriers, phagocytic cells and the inflammatory response.

1st line of defense:

Barriers

Physical Barriers

*pathogens can be removed by- (1) being sloughed off w/ dead skin cells (2) coughing/wheezing (3) Vomiting (4) urination

Biochemical Barriers-secreted by epithelial cells to protect against infrection

*Mucous

*perspiration

*Saliva

*Tears

*Ear wax

(These secretions also contain antimicrobial peptides that kill/inhibit growth.

Normal Flora

*Are non-pathogenic microorganisms living on body surfaces

*Release chemicals preventing colonization by pathogens

Adaptive immunity has several features that distinguish it from innate immunity. Specificity in that each adaptive immune response is induced by a particular antigen, or surface feature that generates an antibody. An innate immune response might be stimulated by a PAMP, while an adaptive immune response is stimulated by a single feature of a bacteria. In addition, cells of adaptive immunity, B and T cells, are allowed to proliferate under certain conditions to mount a defense, this feature is clonality...
