Human Physiology
Explain what conditions stimulate the release of ADH by the posterior pituitary. Then describe in detail the effect of ADH on cells lining the collecting duct.
ADH (antidiuretic hormone) is also known as vasopressin. Increase in osmolality of plasma, decrease in arterial blood volume (as in heart failure), stimulate release of ADH by pituitary. ADH increases the permeability to water, for cells lining the collecting duct in the kidney. This will help to reabsorb water, leading to a concentrated urine. This is facilitated mechanically by increasing expression of water channels in the epithelial cells of collecting duct. Also ADH stimulates increase in permeability of inner medullary region of collecting duct to urea. This is facilitated by increasing expression of urea transporters.
