Identify the four "pathways" of glucose catabolism.
Pathways of glucose metabolism are-
1. Glycolysis- it is the main pathway of glucose metabolism. In this process, one molecule of glucose is catabolized into 2 molecules of pyruvate through a series of chemical reaction using enzymes.
2. Citric acid cycle- also called kreb's cycle. In this pathway, acetyl co-A is formed from the pyruvate and then this acetyl co-A undergoes series of chemical reaction. Oxidation of acetyl co-A liberate ATP molecules.
3. Oxidative phosphorylation- in this process, ADP molecule is converted into ATP by transfer of phosphate molecule via electrone transport chain. ATP are energy rich molecules.
4. Pentose phosphate pathway- this is an alternative pathway of glucose catabilism. In this process, glucose molecule is converted pentose sugar and NADPH is also formed. Ribose -5-phosphate is also formed.
