Autotransfusion is a process through which patient is replaced with his own lost blood during the surgical procedure (such as heart surgery) after a thorough cleaning procedur, So that the patient gains fresh red blood cells without infection, lower risk and more oxygen transfer.

The machine works on vacuum principle. The patient is connected with a suction which draws blood into a reservoir. This blood is then went through a series of cleaning procedures through another system to remove the contaminant particles. This clear blood can be reinfused to the patient's body, thereby reducing the need for a donated blood,Bydoing so, the patient can avoid the risk of complications of banked blood.

It is extensively used in in cardiac, orthopaedic, renal, gynec ,neural, and trauma surgeries.
