1. Would you classify the alteration in normal lung function as a disorder of ventilation or of diffusion? Explain your rationale.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

We can classify the alteration in normal function of the lung as two groups of disorder:

1) Disorder of ventilation:

- In this group, the disorder is in the entry and exit of the air between lung and atmosphere. It includes the derangement in the passage of air through the conducting airways.

- There can be an obstruction of airflow or narrowing of the airways

2) Disorder of diffusion:

- It includes defects occurring in the respiratory passageways. Respiratory passageways are the site where gaseous exchange occurs via diffusion through the respiratory membrane.

- This defect can be present in the Alveoli, alveolar duct, respiratory bronchioles.

A possible important environmental determinant of lung function in children is amount of cigarette smoking in the home. Suppose this question is studied by selecting two groups: Group 1 consists of 23 nonsmoking children 5-9 years of age with two parents who smoke, and have mean forced expiratory volume (FEV) of 2.1 L and a standard deviation of 0.7 L; group 2 consists of 20 nonsmoking children of comparable age, with two parents who do not smoke, and have mean...

The negative effects of ambient air pollution on children's lung function has been well established, but less research is available about the impact of indoor air pollution. The authors of an article investigated the relationship between indoor air-pollution metrics and lung function growth among children ages 6-13 years living in four Chinese cities. For each subject in the study, the authors measured an important lung-capacity index known as FEV1, the forced volume (in ml) of air that is exhaled in...
