Identify ONE injury/condition that affects the glenohumeral joint or the related structures of the joint (capsule, ligaments, cartilage etc.). Briefly describe in your own words what the problem is and ensure you identify which anatomical structures are affected.
Important: A reminder this question is asking about conditions affecting the joint not the muscular tissues
Glenohumeral joint is the joint formed by articulation of head
of humerus with the glenoid cavity of the scapula. Glenohumeral
joint forms the shoulder and is ball and socket type of synovial
joint.
ADHESIVE CAPISILITIS : adhesive capsulitis is a common pathological
condition that affects the glenohumeral joint. The condition is
characterised by adhesion of the joint capsule. The joint capsule
is attacked by inflammatory cells and fibroblasts which results in
scarring and stiffness of the joint capsule along with reduced
synovial fluid. This results in marked stiffness of the shoulder.
The condition is characterised by pain, stiffness and loss of
shoulder movements. The shoulder muscles may become weak over the
time.
Diabetic patients and elderly patients are at high risk of
developing adhesive capsulitis.
