To maintain adequate circulation, the average resting heart rate of a healthy non-athletic person is between 60-90 beats/minute. However, a trained athlete’s heart rate is usually about 40 beats/min (sometimes as low as 30 bpm!). Despite this, adequate circulation is maintained in these athletes. Using the terms cardiac output and stroke volume, explain how this is possible

Answer #1

The athletes have a slow heart rate beacuse their heart musculature is much stronger than te normal individuals. The athletes. The athletes due to their vigourous tasks need a higher cardiac output this is maintained by the increased cardiac musculaure. The decreased heart rate in the athletes is called sinus bradicardia. It is due to the heart adapting to the physical stresses that it is put under by the athlete’s physical activity. This causes the heart to become more efficient producing a greater stroke volume. This in return allows the heart to circulate the same amount of blood with fewer contractions. Thus the cardiac output is maintained.
