True or False If you were in an environment that had zero oxygen but were wearing an oxygen mask supplying your lungs with oxygen, cells within the cornea would die because they would have no way to get oxygen.

Answer #1

The following statment is true.

Cornea is non vascular tissue of our body. In order to remain transparent, the cornea is devoid of any blood vessel. The nutrition to cornea is supplied by aqueous humor and the oxygen is directly absorbed from the atmosphere.

Some inner layers of cornea receives oxygen from diffused oxygen in aqueous humor, but this amount is very less and whole of cornea can't rely on this small amount. The outer layers totally depend on outer atmosphere for oxygen.

Thus, if we go in an atmosphere with zero oxygen, our cornea will gonna die.

Background Almost all animal and plant cells require oxygen and give off carbon dioxide. This is called gas exchange and it occurs by passive diffusion. Some animals do all or most of their gas exchange across their skin (for example amphibians) but they have very low metabolisms and use very little oxygen and get rid of very little carbon dioxide. On the other hand humans (and other mammals) have very high metabolic requirements and we can’t rely on gas exchange...
